A common addition to any house is the garage, and believe it or not, a lot are self built. Though it might take quite a bit of time, it can save lots of money. If you have no idea what goes into building a garage, but you like the idea of building one yourself, read this article. If you are looking for a step by step walk-through, this will not satisfy you. Despite the obvious challenges of self construction, garage installation is a realistic goal.
Every builder needs his tools. Though Garage installation kits are available, you will probably want to build yours from scratch. A variety of materials are needed, from wood to nails, so be sure to organize beforehand.
The first thing you will create is the foundation. Border the area that you will pour cement into with wood planks. The surface on which you lay the cement must be completely flat and even. You must have metal rods, usually steel, running the length of the cement, as it solidifies the concrete once it is dried.
The next thing to do is begin work on the wall. The walls themselves will be built separately then late attached to the house. It is easiest to construct the walls with no openings (doors, windows… Etc) first. The walls fit to the foundation at studs which will be about two feet apart. Be sure that the wall connects to the foundation smoothly, with no gaps or discrepancies.
To build the roof, you can either make the trusses yourself or order ready made ones. If you order ready made ones take care that the sizing is correct. Carefully measure the appropriate dimensions. The construction must be sturdy and even to prevent collapses.
You must then encase the roof with either plywood or particle board. They must be uniformly cut to prevent uneven distribution. After you have them regimented over the trusses you can attach them together. You will eventually cover them, but that comes later.
Assuming you want windows, edge them with caulk. This will prevent anything leaking in or out of the garage. Build a sill and frame, then leave the window outside ready for installation.
The next step is to side the walls. You will do much the same as when covering the roof, using the same supplies. Once again, make certain there are no gaps and that the boards meet flatly. If you have an overhang, a little more deliberation may be required.
In the main, at this point, your garage will be done. You can further insulate as you wish. A felt finish to the roof will prevent water from leaking through and is highly recommended.
